How to Use UGC Ads: A Practical Guide for Brands

AdBurner Team8 Oct 20263 min read

A useful UGC ad shows a specific person solving a specific problem with a product. Before hiring creators or generating scripts, decide what the viewer should understand and what evidence you can actually show. This guide walks through a first campaign using a fictional desk-accessory brand; the examples are planning exercises, not client results.

Understand what you are buying

Customer-created content, commissioned creator content and influencer distribution are different purchases. A creator can film a natural-looking product demonstration without posting it to their audience. An influencer placement includes distribution. A genuine customer review reflects a real customer's experience. Do not write a paid performance as if it were an unsolicited customer testimonial.

For a first brief, separate the creative fee from usage rights, editing rights and distribution. Specify where the video can run, how long the permission lasts, whether paid advertising is included and whether raw footage is part of the handover. A video file arriving in your inbox does not answer those questions.

Write a brief around one buying objection

Imagine a brand selling a reusable cable organiser. The audience already knows cable clips exist; the objection is that adhesive accessories can make a rented desk messy. A useful brief asks the creator to demonstrate removal on an appropriate surface. It should not promise that the product works on every material unless the brand can substantiate that claim.

  • Audience: people organising a small work desk.
  • Situation: charging cables keep falling behind the table.
  • Message: show how this particular organiser holds the cables.
  • Proof: actual product footage, including the installation and removal process.
  • Objection: surface compatibility, answered using verified instructions.
  • Action: view the product page for dimensions and compatible surfaces.

Attach product instructions, approved wording, price information, pronunciation notes and examples of the visual tone. Identify claims the creator must not make. This saves more revision time than asking for a video that feels “viral”.

Turn the brief into a filmable sequence

Use this illustrative sequence for a short vertical edit. The timing is a creative starting point, not a platform rule or performance guarantee.

  1. Opening: a cable slips behind a desk while the person reaches for it.
  2. Demonstration: show the organiser being installed without cutting away from the important step.
  3. Detail: close-up of cable thickness and the actual holding mechanism.
  4. Qualification: show or caption the relevant surface guidance.
  5. Close: give one clear next step that matches the landing page.

Film extra close-ups and a clean product shot. Keep captions clear of interface controls and check the export on a phone. TikTok's own creative guidance recommends native-looking vertical content with a hook, product message and clear action; consult the destination platform's current specifications before exporting. TikTok-specific guidance applies where that platform is available, not automatically to every market.

Use AI as a planning assistant

Give an AI tool the approved brief and ask for three different opening ideas. Instruct it to flag missing facts rather than invent benefits. Then select a filmable version, rewrite it in the creator's natural language and check every claim against the product. AI can organise a shot list; it cannot verify that a person used the product or that a promised result occurred.

Example prompt: “Using only the approved facts below, propose three openings for a cable-organiser demonstration. For each, give the spoken line, first shot and evidence needed. Do not invent testimonials, discounts or performance claims.”

Agree on a test before production

Keep the offer and main demonstration consistent while testing different openings. Decide whether success means qualified enquiries, purchases or another meaningful action. A high view count with weak landing-page engagement can indicate entertainment without purchase intent. Start with the measurement exercise in our UGC hook testing guide rather than declaring the most watched video a winner.

Pre-launch handover checklist

  • Usage permissions and music rights cover the intended placements.
  • Claims, captions and the landing-page offer agree.
  • Required advertising disclosures are present.
  • Audio, crop, captions and the final link work on a phone.
  • Each variation has a clear filename and test hypothesis.
  • The team has agreed who approves revisions and reviews results.
